Scottish designer Chloë McCormick has taken the art of tapestry to a whole new level with her embroidered creations that combine 3D printing technology with traditional craft.
Chloë came up with the concept whilst studying for the Textile Futures MA at Central Saint Martins where she was able to experiment with laser sintering machines at a London based prototyping bureau.
She learned how to design and print prototype warps of any shape or scale, which she could then embroider with vibrant patterns inspired by her childhood and artists such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Helene Schjerfbeck.
The Tapestry Spectacles in development
Shown here are her hand woven spectacles that she made in collaboration with Nicholas O’Donnell-Hoare, and some of her prototypes for furniture. The warps are made using thermoplastics so they are light, strong and durable - imagine the possibilities!
Prototype for an ottoman
The pieces were recently exhibited as part of the Send to print, 3D printing exhibition at Aram Gallery in London.
