We found this eye-catching tapestry project by French design studio STATUE in the halls of Maison & Objet over the weekend. Called Tapisserie Frondesco, the brilliant colours and interesting construction are the handiwork of STATUE’s founders, product designers Romain Guillet and Louise de Saint Angel.

Providing both decoration and acoustic insulation, Frondesco is designed to fold into a 3D structure, creating a space within a space. Its multicoloured geometric pattern is made up of cleverly braided and folded lengths of cotton.

Frondesco is not the only tapestry created by the designers. For a recent installation at the Brakke Grond museum in Amsterdam, the duo created a 10 metre square tapestry that depicts a snapshot of American students in a pool celebrating Spring Break together.

1500 metres of cotton and fabric strips were braided and folded into a chevron pattern using STATUE’s inventive braiding/folding method. The Spring Break Tapestry has a multicoloured front, and a semi plain back. The chevrons work like pixels, only revealing the image when viewed from a distance.

    Hello,

We like the STATUE tapestries shown on your website very much! Because of acoustic problems in our private house we are looking for a wallhanging to improve the acoustics. Are there already any tapestries for sale and when ‘yes’ … where? Is it possible to sent me some detailed information?

Hope to hear from you, kind regards,
