Day Sign is a collection of 27 products made by Belgian designers Simple Studio that were created in response to questions about necessities. They asked themselves what ‘comfort’ really means? and what objects do we really need in our lives?
Between January, 1st and January, 27th 2011, the studio made a new product on a daily basis that they considered to be necessary to carry out their activities on that particular day.
All of the products are locally produced, using found materials from the surrounding environment; only a few steps away from where the products were put to use. The resulting pieces are pared back, considered designs that put function first, harking back to simpler times. We especially love the wooden storage jars with ‘found’ ceramic teapot lids.
Funnily enough, this project has had the opposite effect on me - I probably don’t really need any of these products for my survival, but I want them all…
Studio Simple is made up of Ann Vereecken, a graphic design graduate from the Royal Academie of Art in Ghent, and Jeroen Worst, who studied Industrial Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Like the Day Sign project, Studio Simple’s work focuses on simplicity and time, and local production and resources.
The Day Sign products were shown for the first time last year at Gallery Valerie Traan in Anwterp, Belgium.
