These colourful wooden tiles, inspired by the architecture, shapes and forms found in Islamic culture and architecture, are one of the more unique surface designs that I’ve seen recently (and that’s said after spending two days at the world’s largest flooring show). They are the work of young, Dutch designer Charlotte Wagemaker, who graduated last year in 3D Product Design from HKU School of the Arts in Utrecht.
To create their intricate 3D patterns, Charlotte painted layers of colour onto the wood and then engraved them with Islamic patterns using the precision of a laser cutter. The results are quite beautiful.
