Last week saw the first annual DIFFA Picnic by Design in New York City. The event is a summer design soiree that features picnic baskets designed by renowned and up and coming designers all for a good cause (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS). We loved this entry by New York-based Input Creative Studio.
Taking design cues from an antique travelers trunk and children’s wagon, the basket is a mix of a modern aesthetic and traditional detailing. A plywood map is applied to all sides of the design and offset by copper hardware. For ease of use and flexibility, there is a sliding tray on top of the basket that can act as a table while casters make it easy to transport.
Inside the basket mini cast iron skillets, bamboo-cutting boards, mason jars and white porcelain flatware create a complimentary dining vignette. Fresh basil and sage plants were included as a natural yet functional element to keep the bugs away. A custom blanket was designed out of canvas, twine, green paint and a “Picnic by Design” stamp. Vintage playing cards, a wooden connect four and piggy bank add an element of surprise and fun to the whole experience.
