This interestingly-textured chair was part of an exhibition we saw last month at London Design Festival by The American Hardwood Export Council, British furniture brand Benchmark and the Royal College of Art. To create the Well Proven chair, Marjan van Aubel and James Shaw have invented a new composite material that combines wood shavings with bio-resin.

A few months ago we posted this ‘making of’ film from Wallpaper* magazine’s 2012 Handmade collection. Today we found another gem. This wallpaper produced by Cole & Son features the distinctive ‘Flora’ pattern by Gucci, which was first created as a scarf design for Grace Kelly in 1966. The design is made up of 15 colours, which requires 15 individual silkscreens; a laborious process that takes so long that the design wasn’t ready for the exhibition back in April. See the papers being produced in this beautiful film by Jamie McGregor Smith shot at Cole & Son’s printing factory.

After three weeks packed full of design (spoga+gafa, Maison & Objet, London Design Festival) it was this simple little exhibition of sticky tapes at legendary designer Jasper Morrison’s studio that made me smile.

With London Design Festival just around the corner this is one of the events that we are particularly looking forward to seeing. Ireland-based Makers and Brothers are coming to London for London Design Festival to show their wares at the SCP, Design Department Store. Run by two brothers, Jonathan and Mark Legge, the products featured are useful sorts of items - often locally handmade, highly functional and simple in their appearance. Read the rest of this entry »
