While studying, she developed a unique craft technique, coiling and hand stitching cotton rope to create both large and small-scale, lightweight, tactile structures that possess sculptural qualities. We Make Carpets are a Dutch design collective consisting of designers Marcia Nolte, Stijn van der Vleuten and Bob Waardenburg. The group have become renowned for their unusual and highly skilled installations that take everyday materials, including everything from cups of coffee to toy soldiers to pasta, and turn them into incredibly intricate patterns on various different scales. There’s no doubt about it, geology is a trendy subject in design at the moment. Designers are bringing nature into the interior with all manner of mined materials such as crystals, minerals, geodes, gem stones, marble, sand etc. The more mystical and unusual looking the better. One of our favourite, more recent, examples is by London based design studio Study O Portable, who have made a series of mirrors made out of sliced, polished and silvered pieces of quartz.
