Currently showing at the V&A in London is the much hyped Postmodernism exhibition, or the ‘PoMo exhibition’ as everyone seems to be calling it. I put aside my Saturday morning to go and see what all of the fuss is about; it did not disappoint. Featuring over 250 exhibits, from fashion and music, to graphics and architecture, I fell in love with the fearless spirit of the movement, the mix of questionable colours, the kitsch materials and the theatricality of it all.

However, after spending an hour walking around in dimly lit rooms filled with loud, non-functional furniture and listening to Grace Jones and Laurie Anderson on repeat, I must say, I could kind of understand why everyone was ready for a bit of minimalism in the 90s…but this didn’t stop me from indulging myself in a few 80s-themed treats from the gift shop afterwards. Slice by Inca Starzinsky

Slice is a series of six scarf designs by London based designer Inca Starzinsky. Made in chiffon silk, each design features a different sliced fruit or vegetable that has been digitally printed in high resolution on to the chiffon silk. Measuring 130 x 130 cm, the larger than life fruits and vegetables are transformed into objects of beauty and sophistication. I especially love the sweeping lines and purple tones of the red onion scarf.

Leather that makes us proud

This month I bought a small leather purse from a man at a street market in Paris. He spoke no English and only with the help of my friend Lucy were we able to communicate and agree on a fair price. Even in a language I didn’t understand, it was clear this craftsman took extreme pride in his work. With signs and gestures, he showed us his pile of raw leather, the beautiful leather tool box he had made for himself and the tools he used to carve the strap of my new bag.  Read the rest of this entry »
